Spittal’s sandy beach and promenade are just a short stroll away and a spectacular cliff-top walk leads to Cocklawburn beach. Only 2 miles away, the Elisabethan ramparts of historic Berwick-upon-Tweed are one of the town’s most impressive features. The town is also home to a good selection of shops and restaurants as well as a station from where visitors can take a 45 minute train journey to the cosmopolitan cities of Edinburgh and Newcastle. Bamburgh Castle, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (which can be accessed by causeway at low tide) and Seahouses, with its working harbour for (seasonal) boat trips to view the fascinating seal and bird colonies of the Farne Islands, are all among the delights within easy reach, as are the many attractions of the Scottish Borders. Alnwick’s magnificent castle and acclaimed gardens are an hour’s drive away. Horse riding, fishing, an indoor swimming pool and golf are all available locally. Shops and pub serving food 0.25 miles

Sitting room with gas fire and unrivalled view of Berwick, Spital beach and the sea. Large double bedroom with dressing room and ensuite shower room/WC and sauna (also accessed from hall). Stairs to lower ground floor: Master bedroom with king size bed, dressing area, sofa bed (for + 2) and ensuite shower room/WC. Two twin bedded rooms. Bathroom/WC (shower over bath). Utility room.

Just returned from a fantastic week's holiday at Mariner's Cottage, Spittal, Berwick. Even with 2 adults, 6 children and 2 dogs, the house and garden were massive. Sauna wonderful! Flowers and wine on the table when we arrived was a really thoughtful touch. Could happily have moved in permanently! Location ideal as only a few minutes walk from the beach and the kids loved the nearby football pitch. Beaches delightful and a wealth of attractions to visit. A week wasn't long enough. Would love to return.

There is a chain of massive castles on the coast waiting for you to discover on one of our Northumberland cottage holidays. Alnwick Castle, dubbed the “Windsor of the North” boasts an impressive renaissance interior containing a wonderful art collection, as well as stunning gardens. The castle at Warkworth is also very well-preserved, while Bamburgh Castle, the seat of the old Kings of Northumbria, has a fantastic location right on the seashore. Don’t miss a trip to Lindisfarne, birthplace of English Christianity, or to Hadrian’s Wall, which runs through the county. And for great shopping and nightlife, and a unique atmosphere, head to Newcastle.
